Cong. CS Bares Priority Infra Projects for 2012

Nearly half of the P20 million allocated by Congressman Cesar Sarmiento for priority infrastructure projects will go to the construction of 11 new multi-purpose buildings as well as the completion of previous MPBs and rehabilitation of similar existing buildings. DA to Award 2012 Gawad Saka Winners

QUEZON CITY, Oct 25 (PIA) -- A 48-year old civil engineer-turned-rice farmer from Kalinga and a 62-year old farmer from Ilocos Norte lead this year’s outstanding farmers and fishermen or 2011-12 Gawad Saka national awardees. In a statement, Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala said engineer-farmer Teodoro Kub-ao Jr. of Kalinga is the national Gawad Saka winner for integrated rice farming, while Ricarte Corpuz of Ilocos Norte is the best in hybrid rice farming. Kub-ao earned more than P1.2 million last year from his four-hectare integrated rice farm in Tabuk City, while Corpuz earned P1.5 million from producing hybrid rice at his farm in Laoag City. The two are among the 25 national winners of the 2012 Gawad Saka, who will receive a total of P6.5 million in cash prizes and project grants, and presidential citation and trophy, in fitting ceremonies in November. October 15 is Global Handwashing Day

The Philippine Red Cross, Catanduanes Chapter, will spearhead the celebration of the Global Handwashing Day in selected schools and communities in the province this October 15. The celebration is aimed at increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases, particularly diarrhea. Last summer, a cholera outbreak in Catanduanes killed nearly 20 people. Including children, due to poor hygiene. The simple act of washing hands with soap can reduce the incidence of diarrhea among children under five by almost 50 percent, and respiratory infections by nearly 25 percent, the Red Cross said. Nearly 10,000 dying every year from diarrhea in the Philippines, with the Department of Health citing it as among the leading causes of death with a rate of 16 deaths per 100,000 children. VIRAC, Catanduanes, Oct. 2 (PIA) -- The National Statistics Office (NSO) provincial office here led the observance of the 23rd National Statistics Month (NSM) this October with the theme: “Monitoring Progress on Decent Work through Statistics: Pathway to Inclusive Growth." The activity is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 “Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month."
