Diarrhea Kills 3 in Catanduanes

MANILA, Philippines – Two children and a 59-year-old man have died from diarrhea in Virac, Catanduanes, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tuesday.

NDRRMC said the 3 male victims, aged 1, 6 and 59, died of severe dehydration due to acute gastroenteritis.

Eighteen others are being treated at the Eastern Bicol Medical Center.

According to the NDRRMC, the victims may have been drank contaminated water from a spring at the Sto. Domingo River.

The agency also cited lack of sanitary toilets, lack of potable water, poor hygienic practices and improper disposal of solid and liquid waste as possible reasons for an increase of diarrhea cases.

NDRRMC also said the increase in diarrhea cases in the province coincided with an increase in cholera victims. -- Report from Robert Mano, dzMM
