A Viracnon has done it again.

For four Sundays of September, law graduates undergo the most important rite of passage in the legal profession: the BAR examinations. The Bar is a rigorous test of eight subjects, each testing the graduates’ knowledge, reasoning and writing abilities.

One of the examiners in the 2008 Bar Exam is Atty. Juanito Gianan Arcilla of Marcelo Alberto, Virac. Atty. Arcilla prepared the Bar questions on Political and International Law. The said exam consisted of the following subjects and its corresponding weighted average: Political and International Law (15%), Labor and Social Legislation (10%), Civil Law (15%), Taxation (15%), Mercantile Law (15%), Criminal Law (10%), Remedial Law (20%), and Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises (5%) for a total of 100%.

Examiners are deemed experts in their respective fields, and are chosen on the basis on their contributions to legal education. Other examiners of the 2008 Bar were Atty. Salvador Poquiz (Labor and Social Legislation), Atty. Cynthia R. Del Castillo (Civil Law), Atty. Victorino C. Mamalateo (Taxation), Justice Sixto C. Marella, Jr. (Mercantile Law), Justice Lucas P. Bersamin (Remedial Law), and Justice Francisco P. Acosta (Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises). Justice Dante O. Tinga was the chairperson of the 2008 Committee on Bar Examinations.

Of the 6,364 examinees, only 20% (roughly 1,310) passed. The oath-taking of the successful bar candidates was held last April 28, 2009 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

Atty. Arcilla graduated cum laude at San Beda College of Law, Class 1982. He taught Constitutional Law at San Beda from 1984 until 2006, He also served as its Prefect of Student Affairs. He is presently a law professor at the University of Perpetual Help Rizal (UPHR) College of Law teaching Constitutional Law and is a managing partner at Brilaw or Brillantes, Navarro, Escolin, Jumamil, Arcilla, Martinez and Vivero Law Office. Atty. Arcilla is married to Della Esmeralda of Naga City and has two sons, Juan Antonio and Juan Martin. He is the son of Pelagio S. Arcilla and the late Concepcion Gianan-Arcilla.
