Bicol Registers RP's Fastest 2009 Economic Growth Rate at 8.2%

Legazpi City (12 August) -- Bicol Region's economy grew by 8.2 per cent in 2009, twice its pace in 2008 and much faster than the 1.1 per cent growth at the national level, reports the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) in Bicol. The same report shows that the industry sector remained the strongest performer with an 18.3 per cent expansion. Bicol Region topped all other regions in the country in terms of growth. The Service sector, which remained the biggest contributor to the region's output at 41.8 per cent, grew at a faster rate of 5.0 per cent from 3.8 per cent the previous year. Except for Transportation, Communication and Storage, all subsectors recorded accelerated growths. Growth of Transportation, Communication and Storage slipped to 4.2 per cent from 4.3 per cent in 2008. Trade, on the other hand posted a 2.8 per cent growth, a very slight improvement from the 2.7 per cent expansion in 2008. Similarly, Finance registered an uptrend at 8.5 per cent in 2…

The Good and Bad Sides of Jollibee Virac

Reports say that Jollibee Foods Corporation failed to hit its target of P1-million in sales during the opening day of its Virac store. Still, the reported P740,000 total gross sales is easily the biggest ever for a local store. Too bad most of that moolah is going to Manila to the coffers of the giant fastfood corporation. This is the bad side of having Manila-owned stores like Jollibee, which gets all its raw materials from its commissary in Laguna. The most that it can do to repay Catandunganons who fork over their hard-earned money for burgers, spaghetti, fries and chicken is to at least have the Jollibee Foundation spearhead CSR projects like the Busog-Lusog-Talino feeding program for indigent kinder pupils, build a classroom here and there, and hire local students as restaurant crew under its Skills Enhancement and Education Development for Students (SEEDS) program tie-up with DOLE. On the side, local fast food establishments need not fret over the Jollibee thing; their burge…

Bicol Plantations to Receive Grant Money - BM

SORSOGON CITY—Abaca and coconut plantations in the Bicol region have been identified and placed by the Department of Agriculture (DA) under its technology commercialization (TechCom) program which is funded by a grant from the government of Japan. The grant, according to DA regional executive director Jose Dayao, was under Japan’s 2KR (Kennedy Round)-Grant Assistance for Underprivileged Farmers (GAUF) that aims to support a range of diverse projects that adopt appropriate technology for commercial use. Last year, the Tokyo approved a ¥300-million grant under 2KR- GAUF for the Philippines to help tillers who can barely meet their families’ basic needs to raise their income and yield per hectare. The grant equivalent to $2.59 million would benefit small farmers in the country’s poorest provinces, according to Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap. The project for Bicol’s abaca farms intends to enhance productivity through integrated-farming system dubbed Abakayamanan Program spearheaded…
